Myth-Busting Medicine: The Lies Your Grandma Told You (or didn't?)

We’ve all heard them—those health tips passed down from well-meaning relatives that sound oddly convincing but leave you scratching your head. From “Don’t go outside with wet hair—you’ll catch a cold!” to “Carrots will give you perfect eyesight!”, these nuggets of wisdom have stuck around for generations. But are they actually true?

Spoiler alert: Many of them aren’t.

This series is all about separating fact from fiction, taking a closer look at the quirky, outdated, and downright bizarre health advice we’ve all believed at some point. Along the way, we’ll debunk these myths with science, a touch of humor, and maybe even a pinch of nostalgia.

So, grab a cup of tea (yes, it’s actually good for you), and let’s dive into the wild world of health myths—because Grandma’s advice isn’t always the cure-all she claimed it to be!

🚫 Myth #1: If you have acne, you need to stop eating sugar, grease, and fat.

Let’s clear the air (and your skin): Diet isn’t the sole cause of acne. Sure, these foods might sometimes trigger breakouts for certain people, but acne is way more complicated than what’s on your plate. Hormones, stress, and genetics all play a huge role. Balance your diet, but don’t blame yourself every time you indulge in fries or chocolate.

🚫 Myth #2: All back pain is caused by inactivity, or over-exercising.

Just not true! While these things can trigger back pain, there are so many other culprits. Poor posture, stress, old injuries, and even things like weak core muscles or an unsupportive mattress can mess with your back. Pain is your body’s way of saying something’s off… it’s not always just about how much you sit or lift.

🚫  Myth #3: IBS is an incurable disease.

False! While IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) can be frustrating, it’s not a life sentence.  With the right tools…like dietary changes, managing stress, and sometimes probiotics—many people see major improvements. IBS isn’t “curable” in the traditional sense, but you can totally regain control of your gut and feel amazing again.

🚫 Myth #4: Only women get osteoporosis.

Think againOsteoporosis isn’t just a “women’s health” issue. While women are at higher risk, men aren’t off the hook, especially as they age. Low testosterone, poor diet, and lack of exercise can all weaken men’s bones. Strength training, vitamin D, and calcium are just as important for you guys.

🚫 Myth #5: Teenagers don’t need that much sleep.

Actually, teens need way more sleep than adults! Growth spurts, raging hormones, and brain development require 8–10 hours a night. Skimping on sleep doesn’t just cause grumpiness and those famous “attitudes”,  it can mess with their learning, immunity, and even mental health. If a teen in your life is always groggy, it’s not laziness…they’re legit tired!

🚫 Myth #6: All coffee is healthy.

We love coffee, but not all brews are created equal. While coffee can be packed with antioxidants, not all coffee is created equal. Many brands are loaded with pesticides, high acidity, and even mold (yikes!). These hidden nasties can mess with your gut, trigger inflammation, and even drain your energy instead of boosting it. If you want your morning brew to truly work for you, stick to clean, organic coffee that’s tested for toxins… skip the low-quality crap, unless you like severe indigestion.

🚫 Myth #1: Keto or vegan diets are the healthiest way to eat.

Keto works for some. Veganism works for others. There is no one-size-fits-all diet! Everyone’s body is unique, and what fuels one person might make someone else feel sluggish. Instead of hopping on the latest diet trend, focus on whole foods and listen to your body. It’s all about balance, not extremes.

🚫 Myth #2: Being cold makes you sick.

Let me clear this up…cold weather doesn’t give you a cold. Viruses do! Bundling up keeps you cozy, but the sniffles come from germs spreading, especially indoors where people are huddled up together. Wash your hands and keep your immune system strong. That’s all you really need to do to stay healthy this winter.

🚫  Myth #3: You have to do cardio to lose weight.

Ugh, the treadmill myth! Yes, cardio is great for your heart and endurance, but weight loss? That’s a team effort involving strength training, sleep, stress management, and your diet. Building muscle actually boosts your metabolism, helping you burn more calories even at rest. So don’t skip the weights, especially after age 40.

🚫 Myth #4: Meat is bad for you.

Red meat often gets a bad rap, but it’s not the villain it’s made out to be…if it’s high-quality. Grass-fed beef (I love a ribeye steak). Chicken should be organic, fish… wild-caught. These can all be nutrient powerhouses, packed with protein, iron, and omega-3s. The real issue? Overprocessed meats and how much you’re eating. Moderation and quality are essential.

🚫 Myth #5: If you have an autoimmune disorder, you’re unhealthy.

This simply isn’t the case… Yes, autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s or lupus can bring challenges, but they don’t define your health. With the right lifestyle choices, eating anti-inflammatory foods, managing stress, and getting enough rest…you can feel vibrant and thrive. Your diagnosis doesn’t control your destiny.

🚫  Myth #6: Sports drinks like Gatorade are great for hydration.

Haha…Most of them are sugar bombs with a sprinkle of electrolytes.  Unless you’re running marathons or sweating buckets, you’re probably better off hydrating with good ol’ water and maybe a pinch of Himalayan salt for electrolytes. Your body will thank you…and so will your teeth.

🚫 Myth #1: Detox teas will cleanse your body.
Reality check: Your liver and kidneys are the OG detox machines—they’re doing the hard work already! Those pricey teas? Mostly a mix of herbs and laxatives that might leave you running to the bathroom but won’t magically erase toxins. Want to help your body detox naturally? Simply hydrate, eat whole foods, and get your greens in.

🚫 Myth #2: Carbs are the enemy.
Raise your hand if you’ve ever been scared to eat a slice of bread. (Yep, me too.) Truth is, carbs aren’t the problem—it’s about the type of carbs. Whole grains, fruits, and veggies? Superstars. Processed, sugary stuff? Not so much. Balance is key, and your body actually does need carbs for energy.

🚫 Myth #3: Eating fat makes you fat.

No it does not… Healthy fats (like those from avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil) are essential for your body. They support brain health, keep your hormones balanced, and even help you absorb vitamins. It’s the processed junk and sugar-laden foods we really need to watch out for. Fat is your friend—just choose the good kind!

🚫 Myth #4: You need to sweat buckets for a workout to count.
Not true! Movement matters more than intensity. A gentle walk, yoga flow, or even walking up and down stairs can do wonders for your body and mind. Exercise is about what feels good for YOU, not what looks intense on Instagram.

🚫 Myth #5: You need to eat perfectly to be healthy.
Spoiler: Nobody eats perfectly—not even wellness bloggers! Life’s too short to stress over every bite. Focus on nourishing your body most of the time and enjoying treats guilt-free when you want. Brownies and cookies can be soul food too.

🚫 Myth #6: All multivitamins are the same.                                                                     This one gets me every time. Just because you grab a multivitamin off the shelf doesn’t mean it’s doing much for you. Many store-bought brands are packed with synthetic ingredients your body barely absorbs. Some even contain fillers and unnecessary additives. If you’re going to supplement, make sure it’s high-quality and bioavailable—meaning your body can actually use it. Otherwise, you’re literally flushing your money down the drain!

🚫 Myth #1 All collagen is created equally.

Definitely NOT! Some collagen powders are missing key types that your skin, hair, nails, and joints need to thrive. Many are also poorly absorbed, meaning you’re basically just making expensive smoothies. Look for collagen with all five types and proven bioavailability for real results…or just the specific ones for your body’s needs.

🚫 Myth #2: Dancing isn’t effective exercise.

Dancing is a full-body workout that improves balance, cardio health, and even brain function. Plus, it’s FUN, so it doesn’t feel like a “workout” or gym trip. Who wouldn’t want to burn calories while rocking out to their favorite jams?

🚫 Myth #3: You need 8 glasses of water a day.

Not necessarily… Everyone’s hydration needs are different, and that “8 glasses” rule isn’t one-size-fits-all. Your body gets water from food, too. So, listen to your body and your thirst…it’s smarter than you think!

🚫 Myth #4: Your feet can’t cause back pain.

Umm, they absolutely can. Poor foot alignment or improper shoes can throw off your entire posture and lead to some of the worst back pain you’ve ever experienced. So, if your back is bugging you, maybe start by checking into your foot health and, of course, your shoes.

🚫 Myth #5: Fruit should be avoided on a no-sugar diet.

Fruits are packed with fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, which slow down sugar absorption. That is not the same as eating a candy bar! A no-sugar diet that cuts out fruit is missing the point…and a whole lot of nutrients.

🚫 Myth #6: EMFs in your home can’t affect your mental health.

Actually, they might. Excessive exposure to electromagnetic fields (like from Wi-Fi and electronics) has been linked to stress, anxiety, and poor sleep. Consider unplugging or using EMF-blocking tech…there are so many neat things out there that can help with this scary exposure.

🚫 Myth #1: You shouldn’t drink water an hour before bed.

Who came up with this one? If you’re thirsty before bed, drink up! Staying hydrated can help with overnight recovery. Just keep it in moderation to avoid midnight bathroom runs.

🚫 Myth #2: A glass of wine a day is too much.

The truth? One glass of wine, especially red, can be fine for most people. It has been shown to be heart-healthy because it contains antioxidants like resveratrol, which may improve cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation, and support blood vessel health when consumed in moderation. Bonus points if you sip a high-quality, sulfite-free wine. Cheers to balance!

🚫 Myth #3: Your shoes can’t bring germs into your home.

They do…ugh. Shoes pick up dirt, bacteria, and even pesticides. Want a cleaner home? Leave them at the door and rock some cozy slippers inside.

🚫 Myth #4: Viruses can’t live longer than 24 hours on surfaces.

Wrong…Certain viruses can linger on surfaces for days, depending on the material. Regular cleaning and good hand hygiene are your best defense.

🚫 Myth #5: Chewing gum is bad for your teeth.

Not necessarily! Sugar-free gum can actually help clean your teeth by increasing saliva, which fights acid and bacteria. Some chewing gums that contain real peppermint can also ease indigestion as well. Just skip the sugary stuff that feeds cavities and smells like a candy factory.

🚫 Myth #6: Hot showers & baths are bad for you.

Actually, they can be amazing! Hot water soothes sore muscles, improves circulation, and helps you relax. Adding magnesium sulfate, (epsom salt) can improve magnesium levels in your body, promoting better sleep and overall well-being.

🚫 Myth #1: Stretching before exercise prevents injuries.

Truth: While stretching can improve flexibility over time, static stretching right before exercise may actually weaken muscles temporarily and won’t necessarily prevent injuries. Dynamic warm-ups are better for priming your body for movement. And sometimes stretching afterwards is better.

🚫 Myth #2: All “whole grain” breads are healthy.

Many “whole grain” labeled breads are highly processed and contain added sugars, preservatives, and minimal actual whole grains. Always check the ingredient list…if the first ingredient isn’t whole grain, it’s not the real deal. And look out for added sugars, and just too many words you cannot pronounce.

🚫 Myth #3: Cracking your knuckles causes arthritis.

There’s actually no scientific evidence linking knuckle cracking to arthritis. The sound comes from gas bubbles popping in your joints and is generally harmless unless it causes pain.

🚫 Myth #4: Nightshades like tomatoes and peppers are toxic for everyone.

While nightshades can trigger inflammation in some people with autoimmune conditions, they’re packed with nutrients and perfectly healthy for most individuals. Avoiding them unnecessarily could mean missing out on key vitamins.

🚫 Myth #5: Microwave ovens destroy nutrients in food.

Not necessarily…Microwaving food actually preserves nutrients better than some other cooking methods, like boiling, because it uses less heat and time. It’s a safe and effective way to prepare meals.

🚫 Myth #6: Skipping breakfast is bad for you.

Intermittent fasting, which often involves skipping breakfast, can actually support weight management, metabolism, and brain health. It’s not about the timing but the quality of the food you eat throughout your day.
